This image is one of a series of 3400 taken at temperatures in the range of 9-21K. It demonstrates the temperature variability as well a the superb stability of the LT-STM. Cu/Cu(111) In a quantitative study the long-range interaction between single adatoms mediated by the electrons in the two-dimensional surface-state band was determined. The interaction potential was calculated by evaluating the distance distribution of two adatoms from a series of STM images.
